a birthday, a book, a gift

For my birthday this year the universe gave me Ann Patchett.

And my joy and gratitude is such that I’m going to pay the gift forward by passing Ann Patchett on to you.

If you’re a regular reader here, you know I’m more likely to spend a week reflecting, revising, and rewriting a post than to share a few hasty sentences dashed off on the fly.  (That will never be my way.)

But what is a birthday if not an opportunity to change things up a little?.  So, hello from the Baltimore Airport.  I have about forty minutes before I board a plane to Atlanta, a good incentive to write fast and cut to the chase.

If you’ve turned on your car radio, opened the newspaper, or perused the front table at your local bookstore over the last week or so, chances are you’ve heard Ann’s voice or seen her new novel The Dutch House stacked in best-seller-sized piles.  The publication of any Ann Patchett novel is cause for celebration and delight, but The Dutch House has already ignited a special kind of buzz, the kind of excitement that fills auditoriums with eager fans, has people lining up at signings with armloads of books to give to friends, and has its beloved author in demand from coast to coast.

When I noticed that Ann’s two-month-long book tour for The Dutch House would have her speaking in Brookline, Massachusetts, one night and in Concord, New Hampshire, the next, I thought she might welcome a short break from hotels and hired drivers.  “Yes!” she replied to my email offering her two nights in our guest room, black tea and avocado toast, our dog Tess to pat, and my services as chauffeur.

It’s said that when one door closes another opens, and my friendship with Ann is a  case in point.  She was the final guest editor of my sixteen-year tenure as series editor of The Best American Short Stories, a job I loved so much it almost didn’t feel like work, and a job I was deeply saddened to lose due to corporate decisions beyond my control.  The publication party that year of 2006 was bittersweet.  There was a cake for me and a set of sixteen leather-bound volumes, and there was also Ann Patchett herself, in Cambridge to host the evening’s selected readings. Thrilled as I was to meet her at last, after a year of letters and long phone conversations in which we debated the merits and failings of dozens of stories, I was also struggling to hold it together.  It was hard to say a graceful public good-bye to my editing career, which was ending so abruptly and confusingly.  At some point during the cocktail hour, Ann slipped her arm through mine.  “This is terrible,” she said.  And then, despite having known me for all of fifteen minutes, she whispered, “I’m not leaving your side.”

Later that evening as we prepared to untangle our arms and part ways, Ann cemented the deal.  “I like you so much,” she said.  “Even though the book is done, we should still be friends.”  And that was that.  We still are.

When my memoir Magical Journey was published, Ann invited me to Nashville to read at Parnassus .  And when I told my book group where I was going, they decided to come along to cheer me on.  Ann being Ann, she invited all eight of us to dinner at her house.  It was a magical evening and the conversation was spirited but here’s the one detail we all remember: while Ann was in the kitchen putting the finishing touches on the meal, her new little dog Sparky hopped onto the dining room table and sat down in the fruit bowl.  (This was nearly ten years ago; it should be noted that Sparky has grown up to be an impeccably behaved dog who would blush at the memory of such a faux pas.)

My own connection with Ann has deepened over the years, but that story can wait for another time. Right now I have a novel to give away. Suffice it to say that my book group was once again there in force on Tuesday night when Ann addressed a sell-out crowd in Brookline, and she remembered every one of my friends.  That’s the way she is.

It’s always a pleasure to have a dear friend installed in our guest room, but sitting down to a bowl of oatmeal with Ann this morning and talking over breakfast about books we’ve read and people we know and life as it is for each of us these days was about the loveliest way to begin a birthday I can imagine.

Although I read an advance galley over one long July day, for the last week I’ve been listening to Tom Hanks perform the audio version of The Dutch House – an immersion which has at times made me feel more like a member of the Conroy family than my own.  And at each of Ann’s events I’ve learned a bit more of the surprising back story of how this deeply imagined and completely engrossing family saga came to be written – including Ann’s realization as she read through the finished first draft of her book that she needed to throw the whole thing away and start again from scratch.  “It was a really bad book,” she admitted in front of a theatre full of readers. “Fortunately, no one but me ever saw one word of it.”

I asked her this morning if she’d considered, at that moment, just starting an entirely different novel.

“Oh no!” she said, “I was so interested in these characters, and in what happens to them, that I was really excited to go right back into their world and to get it right. By the time I started writing the book for the second time, I knew them all so well that I just had to step back and let them be themselves.”  Little wonder then that this wonderful novel, which writer Mary Laura Philpott aptly describes as “the Patchett-est of all Patchett novels” feels at times more like a work of truth than fiction.

The publisher describes The Dutch House this way:

From the New York Times bestselling author of Commonwealth and State of Wonder, comes Ann Patchett’s most powerful novel to date: a richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are.

And indeed, it’s these intertwined themes of love and forgiveness, of the stories we tell ourselves to survive and the stories we must be willing to revise in order to move forward, that keep The Dutch Houselingering in my mind even as I’m busy doing other things.

Not surprisingly then, at each stop along the way this week I’ve thought of more people I wanted to buy copies for.  It’s the sort of novel you want to press into the hands of every reading person you know.  But having watched Ann sign about a thousand books in the course of two days, I hesitated to place another stack in front of her at the breakfast table.  This, however, is the beauty of a birthday: you get to ask for whatever you want. Of course, Ann was more than happy to sign a book for me and one for a lucky reader, too.

And then it was time to go.  We went outside to have one last look at the chrysalis, which was translucent when we checked it yesterday, revealing the bright, compressed body of the monarch within just waiting its moment to emerge. While we were eating oatmeal and signing books, a butterfly had flown.   That seems fitting somehow, like a good omen upon turning sixty-one.

My mom came over to say happy birthday and good-bye, and I handed her a stunning floral arrangement to take home.

“These are from Yo-Yo Ma,” I explained. “He was in the audience on Tuesday night in Boston and he brought these flowers for Ann, who brought them to our house in New Hampshire, and now, because we’re both leaving, they’re for you.”

This is the kind of magical thing that happens when the universe gives you Ann Patchett for your birthday – you get to give your mother flowers from Yo Yo Ma. And I get to give away one personalized copy of a novel that will work its way into your heart and haunt your imagination long after you turn the last page.

My husband Steve took a few last photos, I gave Ann some peanut butter cups for the road, my dad drove us to the airport, and Ann and I hugged and went our separate ways – she to Washington, D.C. to address another crowd of eager readers, and me to a birthday dinner with my soul daughter and a swing through the south to visit each of my sons.

Ok, time to board here in Baltimore.  Happy reading, my friends.

I have been going back to my ‘roots’ reading mysteries that involve books and libraries and since I’m 69, that’s way far back. I love Ann Patchett’s books and Dutch House is on my list for my trip to Florida. I also love you blogs which got me started on YOUR books.

I love everything about this! Of course the two of you are friends–two of my favorite writers! And then the Yo-Yo Ma flowers! Be still my beating heart… So much fun!

I have Ann’s book designated (not yet purchased) as the book to read once the anesthesia clears and I have my wits about me after a surgery I’m having on October 24th. To have a signed copy via you (and heck, let’s pretend there are flowers from Yo-Yo Ma!) would make my convalescence something to (almost) look forward to.

I’m currently reading Hotel On The Corner of Bitter and Sweet, and rereading A Prayer For Owen Meany.

    Happy birthday!

A gift is receiving one of your posts, Katrina; they are always so touching & beautifully expressed experiences that many of us can identify with. Today’s has the touch of synchronicity in it…not only did I just read a review of The Dutch House that prompted me to order it from the library, but in the middle of last night, watched an interview with Yo Yo Ma that I totally enjoyed…such a sweet guy!

So, the above, along with feeling that chrysalis is an extraordinary metaphor for your “winging” a post on the fly..! ((:

I was lucky enough to be in the audience in Traverse City, MI. where I live when Ann Patchett was here promoting Commonwealth and she was a soulful, relatable, and funny. I have enjoyed everything she’s written! I am currently in deep in the Overstory by Richard Powers, Revolution of the Soul by Seane Corn & City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert – I feel so blessed to read such varied stories. I’m currently listening (some long drives lately) to Malcolm Gladwell’s Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don’t Know. It’s a long lesson in not assuming we know another person’s truth. It’s a complicated book that is making me think.

The Dutch House is a book I want to read! I enjoyed reading about your friendship with the author. I have so many books I want to read, both on my kindle and actual books I have bought! One on my kindle I was reading was a biook about Lois Lenski, an author and illustrator I love. Started her books as a child. I still love children’s books!

Happy Birthday, to one of my favorite and wisest bloggers.

Happy Birthday Katrina! What a lovely post. Ann Patchett is one of my favorite authors, I have loved all her books. I haven’t yet bought a copy of The Dutch House because I still want to be looking forward to reading it. In the New York Times review there is a quote from her ” I’ve been writing the same book my whole life-that you’re in one family, and all of a sudden, you’re in another family and its not you choice and you cant get out” This might be exactly why I love her work so much, because I know that exact feeling. I checked the link you posted for stops on her book tour ,only to see she was actually here this afternoon (in Rochester) and I didn’t know, so disappointing. Anyway thank you for sharing the story of your friendship, what a lovely thing for both of you.

A post from you, Katrina, makes any day feel like a birthday but I have to say that Ann Patchett in the guest room and flowers from YoYo Ma would be enough for a lifetime of birthdays. I try to start each day reading some Mary Oliver poems; my favorite collection is Devotions which spans much of her life work. I’ve been listening to Tom Hanks reading The Dutch House and know I will cry when it’s over; that’s why I hope to have the hardcover also. It’s a book to savor. Thank you.

Your lovely script on Being 60 has left me awestruck and feeling very fortunate to have found you oh, so many tears ago! Your emails are always such a joy for me to read and I frequently pass them on to my friends and loved ones. Although I am 69, I found myself in almost every word you so beautifully wrote! And, yes, sixty is the end of being a perfectionist. I’ve no longer the time nor the want to get everything looking perfect!! I posted your Bring 60 on my Facebook page knowing it will be enjoyed by many of my dear friends.

Currently, I’m reading ‘The Red Coat’ by Dolley Carlson and I am finding it most enjoyable! The love of reading has been mine for many years, now, and I own a Kindle and must confess to keeping it quite busy!

I was in New Hampshire for most of August and September dealing with a family health issue. Somehow, in the mix, I found myself finishing up my re-immersion into all things Carol Shields and moved on to Alice Munro. These Canadians have provided me a rope to hold onto as I continue to navigate the emotions that come with loss and a shifting family landscape. Being in New Hampshire for so long was wonderful. It was difficult to come back home. I wish you a safe and happy birthday trip.

I really can’t think of a better way to spend a birthday, can you? Well, maybe I’d nix the oatmeal in favor of something a little less virtuous, but other than that, it sounds wonderful. I think sometimes those accidental friendships end up being the most cherished.

Also? You did pretty good writing on the fly, my friend. Add that skill to your arsenal.

I’m in between books at the moment unsure of which one to start next and so it’s serendipitous that I should receive your email right at this time. I know exactly which one I’ll be reaching for now. Sending birthday wishes all the way from Australia! Pam xx

I forgot to mention what I’m reading — Just picked up Fair Play by Eve Rodsky and just finished The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo (loved it).

First, happy birthday Katrina! Second, I can’t believe how fortuitous it is that I opened your blog now (it can sometimes take weeks before I get to all my “fun” reading); third, I tried ordering Ann’s new book online but it got declined due to an input error; and fourth, I’m going to be in Nashville next week and just realized that Parnassus is less than five miles from where I’m staying! Regardless if I’m the lucky winner to receive a signed copy of “The Dutch House,” I’m taking a taxi to Ann’s bookstore to buy a copy there! I do believe the stars are shining on me.

On a side note, I was lucky enough to meet Ann at a book signing during the Commonwealth tour (I live in Virginia, so it was a nice coincidence). So I briefly shared with Ann that I found her writings via your blog and glowing recommendations and she signed my book, “I love Katrina, too.” Now, if the opportunity to meet you would present itself, we’ll come full circle! P.S. I’m only 45 minutes away from BWI. ~ Janet xo

It’s my 69th birthday today so having a book by Ann would be just a lovely birthday surprise. If you could throw in a bouquet from Yo Yo Ma it just might throw me over the moon! Seriously, thanks for this lovely little story; it did make my day.

    Happy Birthday, Beautiful Soul!

Isn’t it lovely when one person’s birthday blesses another? As with each of your posts, your thoughts on all of the most important things of life continue to soothe, offer hope, inspire, and create a quiet space, if even for a moment. Thank you sharing pieces of your days with us.
Clearly I’ve been too heads down in life with three boys (ages 8, 10 and 12), as The Dutch House has not been on my radar, but it is going on my list of reads! My bedside table currently holds Love Soup by Anna Thomas, a surprisingly sweet library of vegetarian and vegan soups for all seasons. I also have A Gracious Space, Fall Edition by Julie Bogart for a quick hug each day as we navigate homeschooling, and Gathering Moss, and Braiding Sweetgrass, both by Robin Wall Kimmerer. She is a wizard and brilliant teacher…I highly recommend a look her way if anyone is not yet familiar.
Much love, Everyone, and good luck to us all!

    Kindly,
    Nicole

I just read The Farm by J. Ramos and the last Harry Potter book. I am beginning What the eyes don’t see about the Flint Michigan water crisis. I loved your book Mitten strings from God. I gave to my new mom friends. It really spoke to me.

I always find comfort and inspiration in your posts! Thank you for writing! I just finished Michelle Obama’s Becoming, and am waiting for Educated from the library, as all my reader friends are raving about it. I’m currently in the middle of a non-fiction parenting book, The Self-Driven Child. Not as delightful as your books, but very good, practical info that I hope will help me with my younger son, who regularly pushes me toward my edge! Happy Birthday!!

    I love Ann Patchett!
Right now, I am listening to the audiobook of Atlas Shrugged. I have always wanted to dive into this book, but the size of it was overwhelming. I finally dove in, via audio. My drive to work and home each day takes two hours, so I have lots of listening time.
Thank you for your wonderful, beautiful posts.

Oh my goodness. I am reading your book The Gift of an Ordinary Day which I found 2 weeks ago at Seoul Repository Bookstore, a one of a kind state-owned used bookstore housed in a building that used to be an Amway warehouse. I was actually looking for a Korean cookbook as my travel souvenir but couldn’t find one that day in this special place. I couldn’t leave without getting anything and I guess your book found me because it was misfiled in the cookbook section. I picked it up and started reading some pages and your words gripped my heart. I’m about to start chapter 5 and thought I’d look you up online and here I am. I just would like to say thank you. I believe the cosmos conspired for me and your book to find each other. It’s exactly I need to be reading right now.

I’m diving into short stories for the first time. So far I’m really enjoying them. At the same time, I look forward to the next novel that I can sink into and savor. I’m also shadow reading the books on my kids’ high school AP reading list.

I’m a wife, the mother of two sons, a passionate reader, a former editor, a slow writer, a friend, a seeker. Somewhere along the way, I realized that a good life is made up not of peak moments but of many small ones – imperfect, fleeting, ordinary, precious. And so I slowed down and began to pay attention. Writing, it turns out, is a way of noticing.

The Way to Start a Day The way to start a day is t The Way to Start a Day The way to start a day is this: Go outside and face the east and greet the sun with some kind of blessing or chant or song that you made yourself and keep for early morning.

The way to make the song is this: Don't try to think what words to use until you're standing there alone. When you feel the sun you'll feel the song, too. Just sing it...

A morning needs to be sung to. A new day needs to be honored...

Your song will be an offering and you'll be one more person in one more place at one more time in the world saying hello to the sun, letting it know you are there. If the sky turns a color sky never was before just watch it. That's part of the magic. That's the way to start a day.
